Throughout our garden we have a variety of trees and plants that provide peaceful beauty and flavorful fruit. Heading up to the back deck we have a mature semi-dwarf lemon tree that gives fruit year round. These lemons are perfect for cookies, cakes, curd, and marinades as well as good ol'fashioned lemonade. Near the walkway we have two well-established orange trees: The valencia is a sweet spring and summer fruit and the navel is a perfect juicing orange that gives fruit from late December through March. Along the edge of the deck are two semi dwarf apple trees that give us a nice combo of sweet and tart apples from early summer to fall. In the spring, cascading blooms of wisteria adorn the pergola. These blossoms give way to a leafy canopy offering shade during the warm summer months. The large tree near the pergola is a mature avocado that provides rich creamy fruit from December through March. We also have two young avocados that started naturally from the fallen fruit of this tree. One is located just outside the front bedroom along the side of the house. The other is just above the lower deck as you walk down the steps. Also in the front we have several banana plants that provide a safe nesting site for the migratory hooded orioles that arrive in the spring. These striking yellow and black birds enjoy the nectar of hummingbird feeders throughout the summer before they head out in September. The front yard also plays host to a variety of semi tropical plants including hibiscus, philodendron, agave, cannas, several species of palm, succulents, ground cover, ferns, shrubs and flowering vines.
